You might live in Orem, Utah if...

While I was running some errands with Sadie this afternoon, I saw the strangest thing. I was stopped at a red light. I looked over and saw two young men in dark pants, white shirts, and black little name tags on their chest. Yes, they were missionaries. This isn't the odd part of my story. The odd thing was, they were holding signs. One said, "Save the lost sheep. Call us with your referrals." The other one said, "Sharing is caring. Send us your referrals." Both posters had their phone number plastered all over them.

I don't know what to think. Here were two Mormon missionaries flashing these posters at cars driving by. It is pretty hot outside so I know they were sweating. Is this a good use of time? Do you think people actually call them with referrals? I'm not saying what they were doing was wrong. I just have never seen that before. I honestly, am not sure how to feel about this. Deep down in my heart, I'm a little embarrassed but at the same time, who am I to judge? When was the last time I tried to share the gospel with anyone? Maybe I am too comfortable and seeing these missionaries made me feel guilty for not doing my part.

Either way, it still seems a little strange.

Hmmm... picketing missionaries... interesting! Huh? I really don't know what to think either. Maybe they lost a bet... but then again, what missionaries bet?

It seems a little strange because it IS strange! I think it's wrong for missionaries to do that. A huge part of the gospel of Christ is developing relationships through personal conversation and service -- not by holding up a sign saying, "Help us help you." The signs we wear are the examples we are, and if someone sees us and wants to be a part of what we belong to, they come to us!

So they were just asking for referrals, huh? Well, they need to get to know the LDS people in the area and develop trust first.

I can't believe it! I really can't! Are you sure they were LDS missionaries? Maybe they were that group who broke off of LDS? Crazy! I'm certain that if the prophet saw these two guys, he would've gently corrected them.

If they tried to do that in Georgia, they'd be dead. I had to remember that you are in Utah.
