My Mom

Since Mother's Day, I have been thinking about my own Mom quite a bit. Now that I have a child of my own, I find myself thinking, "How did my Mom do this? More importantly, how did she do this so well?"

Here are a few memories I have of my Mom:

1. Those frosted pink and white animal cookies with sprinkles on them. She loved those while I was growing up. I have to be honest, I never really liked them. Funny how I buy them when I go grocery shopping now.

2. We would spend hours brushing each other's hair. I remember when my Mom first started getting gray hairs, she would have me and my sister pull them out for her. Playing with my Mom's hair is how I learned how to french braid.

3. Amy Grant, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, and Shania Twain. I have great memories of blasting their music through the house while cleaning. My Mom always made "working" fun.

4. Skipping school. Sometimes my Mom would let me stay home from school. We would go to a matinee and out to lunch. I will never forget both of us sitting in the theatre sobbing while the credits of "I Am Sam" were playing.

5. Whenever we went to the mall, we always got a cookie from Mrs. Field's. I would get chocolate chip and my Mom would get something with nuts in it.

6. Holidays were always VERY fun at our house. My Mom would make the day very special. She would decorate the table and make delicious dinners. Her favorite holiday is Halloween. When I was in Kindergarten, my Mom dressed up as a witch. She scared me to death when I came home from school!

7. During my senior year in High School, things were tight financially. My Mom went to visit someone in our neighborhood. A few minutes later, I heard her out in the garage. I went out to see what was going on. I saw my Mom filling up grocery bags with our much needed food storage. When I asked her what she was doing, she told me that her friend was going through a hard time and needed it more than we did.

8. My Mom flew out to Provo with me to get set up for college life. We had fun buying all the necessities and she walked around campus with me to find all of my classes so I wouldn't get lost the first day of school. I will never forget driving away after saying goodbye knowing that I wasn't a little girl any more. Knowing that even though she will always been my Mom, things were going to change a little.

9. Trying on my wedding dress after all the alterations had been made. We both sat there crying happy for the future but knowing things were going to change a little more.

10. My Mom was there when Sadie was born. It was such a wonderful feeling to watch my Mom and Dad hold this tiny baby that now made them Grandparents!

I love and admire my Mom very much. She is an amazing woman. I am lucky to have her in my life not only as a Mother but as a best friend.

Oh, Lindsey -- I have so many comments to make! So get ready for a long one . . .

1. I loved those pink- and white-frosted animal cookies. My dad used to buy them. They were such a treat!

4. My mom didn't really "skip school" with us when we were older. But when Lexi and I were in elementary school, she would let us stay at home a lot. Hm . . . she knew we were bright kids and could handle it. But I think our moms are right -- every kid needs to have a spontaneous break once in a while.

6. My mom made holidays fun, too. They were always special days -- even Valentine's and St. Patrick's. Also, I think it's funny that you have a picture of your mom dressed as a witch and standing next to a picture of Jesus. :)

8-9. That's probably why I've stayed home so long. I don't like that sad feeling of things changing and not being a kid anymore. But I feel very prepared to handle my own independence now.

My mom is my best friend, too!
