I had spent the afternoon unpacking the boxes that have been sitting by our front door since we moved in. Most of the boxes were filled with my pre-Sadie clothes. When I was finished organizing the contents of the boxes, I had 3 piles; things I wanted to keep, give to the thrift store, and stuff that just needed to be thrown out. First, I stuffed all the trash into some garbage bags. Then I put Sadie on my back in the handy back pack I recently purchased. Finally, I grabbed the trash and headed down the three flights of stairs to our community dumpster. I unlocked the gate to get into the dumpster area. My hands were quite full so I couldn't hold the gate door open. Right after I set my bags of trash down, I heard the gate slam behind me. I didn't think much of it until I tried to leave. I tried to push the gate open but we were locked in!
At first I wasn't too worried. I thought I would just reach over and unlock the gate. Nope. Not going to happen. My arm wasn't long enough. My next genius idea was to stand on the gate door so that I would be able to reach the lock on the other side. The only problem was that the gate and fence are made out of that plastic material so the minute I tried to stand on the gate, it starting bending and acting like it was going to break. This is when I started to panic. What was I going to do? There was no way I could climb over the fence with Sadie on my back but leaving her on the dirty cement ground wasn't an option either.
There were a few times when I thought I heard a car pull up. I didn't know whether to try and poke my head over the fence to get help or to pretend I wasn't there. I felt so stupid. I also thought how embarrassing it would be to have someone open the gate thinking they were just taking out their trash but HELLO! How would I explain?
Well, I wouldn't be writing this if we didn't escape from the dumpster, so how did we get out? Well, it's actually a pretty anti-climatic ending. After I calmed down a little and started using my brain, I figured out that I could push the latch up from inside the gate. That's it. We were free.
I think I'll have Blake take out the trash next time...
